Weekly Runs

Each Sunday we organise runs in Budapest or in the hills and villages around. These are not competitive or a test of fitness or endurance and everyone is welcome to join us in exploring the known and less well-known parts of the city or the countryside, with refreshments and a reasonably priced meal afterwards when available.

Other Events

A Hash Social is a meeting of Budapest hashers, guests and visitors for the evening in a local bar or café. We choose places that are value for money and serve craft beer, wines, soft drinks etc. There is usually a social every month.

WHAT TO EXPECT

We recommend you wear suitable shoes and clothing as if for hiking and appropriate for the weather. Bring a mobile phone (and power pack if needed) and some Hungarian Forints cash for emergencies. You will also need Hungarian Forints 1,000 for the run fee.

The trail might not pass any shops so bring something to drink just in case. Some Hashers also bring a shot glass as sometimes Palinka mysteriously appears.

We meet at the designated meeting point, usually Batthyany Ter, and go from there to the start point by public transport, so please make sure you have a valid metro pass or enough single tickets to go to the run site and back into the city afterwards.

Before the Hash the Religious Advisor (the RA) conducts a brief chalk and talk session to explain the hash signs to newcomers and impart any other useful advice to the pack (whether asked for or not)

At our Hash, one or more members (called the Hares) lay a trail of cheap white flour, which is then followed by the remainder of the group (called the Pack or Hounds). We use flour as it naturally biodegrades, washes away or is eaten by insects in a few days.

The trail periodically stops at a “check” or some other sign, and the pack then must find where it begins again, which is within any direction; often the trail includes false trails, short cuts, dead ends, back checks and splits as well as some even more exotic marks (like the Which Way and the notorious YAF check). These trail markers are designed to keep the pack together regardless of fitness level or running speed, as front-runners are forced to slow down to find the “true” trail, allowing the stragglers to catch up. Our aim is to ensure that everyone leaves from the start (point A) and arrives at the end (point B) roughly together.

The length and type of trail (hills or urban, inside Budapest or outside etc) is entirely decided by the Hares but is usually about 12km to 15km.

The end of a trail (marked first by BN for Beer Near, and On In where the trail actually ends is an opportunity to socialise, have a drink and observe any traditions of the individual chapter. When the Hash officially ends, many members may continue socialising at an On-AfterOn-DownOn-On-OnAprès HashHash Bash. Often, we use the Hash Pub, the Ganz Bar, at Ganz utca 6 on the Buda side which has craft beer at reasonable prices.

HOW TO FIND AND MEET THE BUDAPEST HASH?

We usually meet at Batthyany Ter on the Buda side but the Hares might decide on an alternative meeting point, so always check the Hash Facebook page for any updates etc from the Hares. We meet every Sunday at 11.30am but in winter we might bring this forward to 10.30am, and once again, please check the Facebook page for any changes.

The best way to get to the meeting point is by taking the Line 2 (Red Line) metro to Batthyany Ter on the Buda side. Come up the escalator to the underground walkway and continue straight ahead until you reach the last exit on your right (marked “Bem Rakpart”). Go up the stairs then turn left at the top. You will find us hanging around on the parapet overlooking the Danube River and in front of Parliament, which is on the other side of the river.

You could also walk to Batthyany Ter or take suburban railway H5 to the terminus at Batthyany Ter if you happen to be on the Buda side of the river to the north. If you do take the HEV, walk straight ahead from the train and you will find the Bem Rakpart exit. Trams 19 and 41 also stop at Batthyany Ter very close to the meeting point and you will see us from the tram if you look towards the river. We don’t recommend driving if you happen to own a car as parking at Batthyany Ter is very limited and as our runs are A to B (the endpoint is not the same as the beginning point) you and your car will be in different places later on. We maintain a large cyber presence through: The website is publicly available but the other three outlets require an application and subsequent membership approval.
